What to do now? I'm Getting Married in Mexico!

By Shama Lama of Waltsense.com

What to do? What to do?

We date 4 years and I know it's time to "crap or get off the pot" as they say. After prolonging engagement to live the bachelor lifestyle a few more years, I pull the trigger. She is excited, I am excited, and life is good. Life gets frustrating when I find out her deadbeat dad saved ZERO dollars for his only daughter.

After going to over 50 weddings in our late twenties, we were sick of the traditional country club weddings and frankly didn't have the cash for such an event. Been there, done that. We both love the beach and hot weather, so destination wedding is the call!

What happens next is for the Murphys Law record books. 3 out of 5 of her bridesmaid get knocked up but we sort of expected it as we are in our early 30s. Then the economy bottoms out and everyone is broke. Not to be outdone, the drug gangs of Mexico declare war on the borders and the news media goes bonkers scaring everyone out of the country. Did I mention these gangs like chopping your head off? Grandma cancels! Then a depression nearly brakes out scaring my guests away and then my fiancé loses her job! Good times!

So now an epidemic of epic proportions breaks out and the Swine Flu is consuming the world and the media. Every news show last night was headlined "Mexico Swine Flu - 80 dead". What a selling point for a destination Mexico. "Come travel with us to Mexico, we'll supply the masks!"

Who the hell hooked up with the pig to start this mess?
I come to work to let it hopefully pass and the first email I see is from HR: "SAP's regional crisis team has issued travel restrictions for non-essential business travel to Mexico due to the outbreak of swine influenza in parts of southern and central Mexico" The ladies in the lunchroom are looking at me like I already have a death wish.

So what to do? We have to wait for now. US Airways is waiving the penalty fee for people cancelling to Mexico. The hotel part for us is booked with Liberty Travel and they may be waiving the cancellation fee. The agent said for our wedding she thinks it is far enough out that we should be fine. She said they will know more at the end of the week. My wedding is in 39 days so that's not a lot of time.

If we have to change the venue – she said we can do that without penalty. However, if there is a difference in price it will not be covered. For example, if you paid $400 for airfare but flights to Jamaica / Dominican Republic are $500 you have to pay the $100 difference. The policy is the same with the hotel.

So the panic begins and I have to start fielding questions as if I am an agent. My agent plays the "it's cool" card as she is banking on not losing 30 people. But do we have enough time to reschedule and plan a wedding in another country a few weeks away?

Do I wait it out or start preparations to try to reschedule my wedding in Jamaica or another destination? For now, I will leave the stress up the better half as I am sure this will consume her time off. The whole point of a destination wedding is to save money and save stress!
